St. Anna

Folk Traditions

“The rain of Sant ‘Anna is a godsend”. Or, “To St. Giacomo and St. Anna enters into the soul chestnut”. And finally, “For every rain Anna becomes godsend”.  These are the 3 most popular proverbs on the occasion of St. Anne, July 26, by which we inaugurate the section on folk traditions. In this regard, a heartfelt thanks goes Cultural Educational Institution Castiglionese who kindly forum where books are taken from the stories we’re going to tell.

“The old peasant spoke of the ‘cloud of S. Anna ‘that broke the summer heat. Even in some area of Tuscany the cloud of S. Anna is also called  ‘the storm (or turbines) of S. Anna’ by virtue of the fact that sometimes the summer storms are disastrous. The day of St. Anne was taboo thresh. A legend tells that a farmer Maremma transgressing the party, he went to work in his fields cursing saint. Suddenly the circle of the threshing became a deep groove. The earth shook and the rain filled the pool that was created by swallowing man deep in the Earth. Even today, where there is a lake with an underground source is said to be the pool of Sant’Anna and every July 26 if you approach these places and you listen carefully to the ground you can hear the sound of hooves or horses, adapting to modern times, the buzz of braiding machines. The feast of St. Anne, then, is an ancient festival that recalls a pre-existing worship of a deity infernal, groundwater and earth. A legend in its content of fertility rite recalls the myth of Persephone the daughter of Demeter abducted by Pluto who return every year to the birth of summer. As the harvest to after remaining seed beneath the earth reborn to a new life. ” (Taken from Life in Tuscany)

There is another aspect to be highlighted.

“In the traditional folk culture there are special days, related to certain figures of the saints which are considered particularly dangerous for the hail. And one of these and its July 26 day of St. Anne. This belief brings out the appearance of temibilità of the sacred that must be properly controlled and ritually to make it favorable. They promise so special fasts. But if in spite of all the threatening clouds are gathering in the yard before they are violently thrown to the cross-shaped iron tools then, ultimately, is being implemented gesture considered by far the most effective but also the most risky and dangerous or maybe just more sinful: throw violently in the yard before the salt and then the chain of the hearth. “(from Customs and Traditions)

“Anne is also the protector of pregnant women and a time always in Maremma and more precisely in Tirli, a woman in turn kept for one year the blue ribbon of the Holy and when another woman was about to give birth to him wore protection.” (Taken from Life in Tuscany)
